While Runaya’s People, Social & Equal Opportunity policies are pivotal in providing equal opportunities to women, there was need for greater focus to address the area of Women Empowerment. Thus, Runaya embarked on the journey of Project ‘Laadli’ through its CSR Initiatives, to address the key challenges that stem women completing education and joining the work force.
Through the CSR approach, Runaya aims to boost women empowerment in the local communities and help the company’s objectives in achieving Gender Diversity, better Employee Retention Rates, and geographic diversity, especially in the backward and tribal regions of Odisha, near the Jharsuguda Operations.
The dropout rates in schools are very high in the adolescent years among girl children.
The challenges arise from basic sanitation
requirements like menstrual hygiene and other health related issues like Anaemia.
To address these challenges, Runaya saw the need to create awareness among the nearby communities regarding the importance of educational and social development, especially of adolescent girls.
Runaya, with the help of ‘Prayatn Sanstha’, conducted a household survey in the nearby ten villages under panchayats of Dalki and Katikela of Jharsuguda District in 2022, to understand the baseline of women empowerment. Following the survey, the following recommendations were identified to improve the awareness and reduce the dropouts among the adolescent girls.
"I am Mehek. I am 15 years old. For a long time, I used to think that education isn't very important for me. Runaya and Project Laadli taught us about our rights and the importance of staying in school through continus engaging programs and activities they organized at our community. Today, I'm confident about my future and what I can achieve. I had never attended any summer camp in my life but recently I participated in a summer camp organized by Runaya. It was like an adventure for me and I got to learn many things that I could not imagine learning from anywhere else."

"My name is Bedasmita, and I am in class 2. Recently, Runaya visited our school with exciting events and prizes. All of us were very happy and excited. Not just that, they also organized a self-defense training program for us. I joined and learned different steps to defend myself. It made me feel very strong and confident. I realized that I could protect myself and be brave in any situation. It was an empowering experience that made me believe in my own strength.
The didis from Runaya also shared their stories. They talked about their hard work and courage. Listening to them inspired me. "My name is Prachi, and I am 13 years old. I had heard about Project Laadli before. One day, a didi from Runaya came to our school and she told us stories about successful women and showed us videos on why education is important.
The best part was the fun games. I learned that school isn't just about boring lessons; it can be fun too. Then, I went to their summer camp. I made new friends and learned many things like karate, painting, crafts, dancing, and singing.
Those activities changed my perception. They made me see that learning can be exciting and filled with new opportunities. Now, I feel more empowered and confident. I believe I can achieve my dreams, and my goals have become bigger. I want to be successful and help others, just like the women in the stories I heard. Thanks to Runaya, I see a bright future ahead."

Through these initiatives, Runaya aims to empower women by focusing on the grass root issues at schools among the adolescent girls. Project Laadli contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals of Good Health and Wellbeing (SDG 3), Quality Education (SDG 4) & Gender Equality (SDG 5) by Improving the education and health conditions for Adolescent girls for their development and growth in the society. Runaya aims to reach 6000 lives with a focus on 400 adolescent girls in the villages under the panchayats of Dalki and Katikela of Jharsuguda Districts. The project is poised to reach further heights by involving more villages and panchayats in the Jharsuguda district by 2025.
The world produces 65 million tons of Aluminium per annum, which results in more than 1 million ton of Aluminium dross being produced every year out of which more than 100,000MT is produced in India. The environmental impact of this hazardous waste is a global problem and needs to be addressed on priority. Runaya addresses this challenge by handling, evacuating, and processing of dross in an environment friendly manner with zero waste and zero discharge.
Runaya has partnered with Vedanta Limited to manage process waste from the largest single location Aluminium Smelter in the world. With our proprietary licenced TAHA technology, Runaya has recycled almost 21500 Tons of Aluminium Dross at Jharsuguda in FY2022, recovering 7,500MT of Green Aluminium. Runaya is poised to reach 60000 Tons of Aluminium Dross Processing capacity per year by FY2025, through its Operations at Jharsuguda and Korba.
Aluminium recovered through our process is one of the most carbon efficient Aluminium produced globally, with only 655 kgs of CO2 per ton of Aluminium produced (Based on DNV Certification for Restora Ultra, for Q4FY22), compared to 15,600 kg of CO2 per ton of Aluminium produced through traditional route (Based on Integrated Report of Vedanta Limited of FY22) resulting in a reduction of 15,000kg carbon/MT.
Due to its lower Carbon footprint, our partner Vedanta was able to brand the recovered Aluminium under Restora Ultra, thus contributing to the low carbon aluminium value chain.
